Born in 1946, Sir Peter Jonas was educated at Worth School, University of Sussex, Royal Northern College of Music and the Royal College of Music in London. In 1974 he joined the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as assistant to the Music Director subsequently becoming Director of Artistic Administration working with all the major international artists and conductors of that era. From 1984 until 1993 he was General Director of English National Opera in London and, from 1993 until his retirement in 2006, he was Intendant (General and Artistic Director) of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the largest and busiest opera company in the world. For his work in the arts, Sir Peter was appointed Commander of the British Empire in 1992 and knighted in 2000. He holds honorary fellowships and doctorates from the Royal Colleges of Music in London and Manchester and the University of Sussex as well as honours from the Bavarian and German Governments. Sir Peter served on the Supervisory Board of all the State Opera and Ballet companies in Berlin and the Advisory Board of the Technical University in Munich. He is on the Supervisory Board of the Netherlands Opera, Amsterdam, is a member of the University Council in Lucerne and lectures at the Universities of Zürich and St Gallen. Sir Peter was President of the Jury of the 2012 ARD (German Public Broadcasting) International Violin Competition in Munich and has also co-organized workshops on the arts and economics at Berlin’s Social Sciences Research Centre where he is now a member of the supervisory Kuratorium. Sir Peter is also active in the study of media, especially film and the new generation of TV series, at film festivals and academic institutions. Sir Peter lives in Zürich and is a keen long distance and mountain trekker having recently completed his latest project of walking the length of Europe from the northern tip of Scotland to Palermo in Sicily.
