Presenter: Mr. Dr. T. Fojo
Dr. Fojo was born in Havana, Cuba and moved to the United States in 1960. He received his MD and PhD from the University of Miami, trained in internal medicine at Washington University/Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, and in oncology at the National Cancer Institute. After 3 years with Drs. Ira Pastan and Michael Gottesman, he became a Senior Investigator in Medical Oncology, and in 2006 Director of the NCI Medical Oncology Fellowship Program one of the largest in the United States. This year he moved to Columbia University in New York. Research interests include: (1) the biology and molecular biology of adrenocortical cancers, pheochromocytomas and neuroendocrine tumors; (2) understanding basic mechanisms of drug resistance and how to overcome such mechanisms; (3) microtubule-targeting agents – how they work and how to better use them; (4) collaborative efforts with Drs. Wilfred Stein and Susan Bates on novel ways to analyze clinical data to better understand outcomes and gain basic insights; and (5) the design, conduct and interpretation of oncology clinical trials and their relation to the cost of cancer therapeutics, the magnitude of the problem and how this might be addressed.
