Yves Benoit, MD, PhD, is Professor of Medicine in Paediatric Hemato-Oncology and Head of the Departement of Paediatric Haemato-Oncology and Stemcell Transplantation at the Princess Elisabeth Children’s Hospital of the University Ghent, Belgium.
He obtained his medical degree in 1974 and started his speciality training in Pediatrics at Ghent University Hospital. He became involved in the paediatric hemato-oncology for the first time in 1977 as and since this date he devoted his career to paediatric hemato-oncology. In 1985 he received his PhD from the Ghent University for his clinical research in the field of paediatric heamato-oncology. The same year (at the age of 36 year) he became the Head of the Departement of Paediatric Haemato-Oncology and Stemcell Transplantation at the Ghent University Hospital.
Professor Benoit’s main clinical interest is the treatment of childhood leukemias and also in psycho-oncologic aspects of childhood cancer in general. He is involved in a large number of prospective clinical trials in various childhood malignancies.

Early in his carreer he was involved in clinical research and particated in the first study of the EORTC leukemia group in 1974. He was founder-member of the Children's Leukemia Group of the EORTC and he has been active in the Board of Children's Leukemia Group since early ninethies. From 2006 – 2009 he was the Secretary of this group and in 2009 he was elected as Chairman. He is re-elected for a second term in 2012. He is also active in translational research with several scientific projects related to childhood leukemia (drug resistance, miRNA).

Committed to the psychosocial problems that children with cancer encountered in children he founded in 1988 a non-profit organisation “vzw Kinderkankerfonds” and he is still the chairman of this organization. One of the major project of this foundation is a comprehensive home care program “Koester” for children with cancer.

He is a member of many scientific societies including the Belgian Society of Pediatric Hematology/ Oncology (BSPHO), an organisation that he founded in 1996 and that he has lead as first president from 1996-2002. He is also member of the International Society of Pediatric Oncology (SIOP), the European Hematology Association (EHA), the American Society of Haematology (ASH). the International BFM Leukemia Study Group (IBFM), the Ponte di Legno Group. the Superior Health Council (Belgium)

Professor Benoit has co-authored more than 125 peer-reviewed articles and over 200 abstracts and book chapters.
